Balmaseda was the first “Villa” of Bizkaia founded in 1199. Considered a medieval city-road, being a transit and meeting point for the exchange of goods, it soon was known best for its market. Even today you can feel under your feet the paved streets, observed by silent witnesses of the past, such as : engraved stone walls, wooden beams from the forests of Encartaciones, arcades, arches, buttresses ... when did time stop here?

In addition, a visit to the Museum of Berets The Encartada will take us back to the beginnings of the industrial revolution. In an exceptional spot on the banks of the river Cadagua, the wool textile factory La Encartada was founded in 1892. Built on a former mill, now we can go through several buildings: the factory workers' houses and the chapel that served as a school. Essential for its superb mechanical wealth: a turbine of the early twentieth century and a complex system of pulleys and belts that drive all the mechanisms of production.
